Caught in the Net: A social shvoong

About the wedding, grants for students, gifts for soldiers, alternative search engines, Flash lessons, ring tones and Flash movies sent in by readers

By Ilan Yitzhayek

This experimental and promising site has already won extensive coverage, but in case you missed it: Businessman Avi Shaked, among the initiators of the Israeli-Palestinian Geneva understandings; designer and journalist Avner Avrahami; and Internet entrepreneur Eyal Rivlin have set up Shvoong – a new and smart international Web site that tries to bridge the huge gap between the need and desire of people to read and the lack of time and sea of information that surrounds them.

Shvoong is based on data bank of high-quality abstracts – for books, plays, newspaper articles, studies, academic papers and more. The site is presented in English, but its founders plan to include a data bank of abstracts in 20 languages and more. The abstracts are provided by the surfers themselves, who will enjoy royalties for their work. Nevertheless, the operators of the site promise that accessing and reviewing the abstracts will remain free and free of charge in any event, and that maintaining the site and paying the royalties will be financed by advertising revenue.

For the enterprise, the intelligence and the ideology behind the establishment of the site, the initiators deserve much praise; but the surfers will be the ones to determine whether the social and cultural concept behind it has achieved its objective.
